Introduction

Rolled Oats (old-fashioned oats) have a long history that has transformed them to become the delicious grain we eat today! They date back all the way to 32,000 years ago and are traced to have origins from the Mediterranean area, specifically southern Italy. Oats also take on the name Avena sativa and are part of the Poaceae or grass family. Rolled oats have been in human diets for thousands of years due to it being a nutritional powerhouse and its versatile usage. The rolled oat has a variety of forms that are used in your everyday life. For example, there are a multitude of foods that use oats as a replacement to accommodate any allergies or intolerances such as oat milk or oat yogurt. These alternatives allow individuals to enjoy products that mimic the same taste and nutrition value as the original. Not only this but colloidal oatmeal or oat powder is used in many cosmetic/skincare products as it can soothe dry, itchy skin and even treat eczema. The many different uses of oats all provide beneficial impact to one's body, which is the main goal we tend to focus on. Despite the various oat forms, here we will focus on the original dried oats and the nutritional effect.

Nutritional Benefits of Oats

1. Rich in Fiber

The fiber within oats is called beta glucan. The majority of fiber in rolled oats are soluble meaning they dissolve in water to form a gel-like substance in the digestive tract. This substance slows down digestion, increases the feeling of fullness, and appetite suppression. Studies show that the daily consumption of beta glucan has lowered LDL cholesterol decreasing the risk of heart disease. The fiber within oats not only supports your fullness and digestion but also it goes deeper and aids your heart health.

2. Vitamin and Mineral dense

Oats are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. Some of these vitamins and minerals include: manganese, phosphorus, copper, vitamin B1(thiamine), iron, selenium, and zinc and each mineral has its own contribution to the overall benefits of oats. For example, manganese is typically found in grains and is extremely important for growth and development. Phosphorus deals with tissue health and bone maintenance. Selenium, overall, is important for regular bodily functions, low selenium levels associated with increased risk of premature death and impaired immune and mental function.

3. Supports Gut health

The fiber within oats, beta-glucagon, promotes the growth of healthy gut bacteria. This bacteria ensures a healthy gut microbiome for digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function.

4. High in Antioxidants

Rolled Oats are high in antioxidants that all have a specific role in health benefits. The beneficial compounds are called polyphenols and avenanthramides. Avenanthramides are solely found in oats and provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

5. Improves Blood Sugar control

Rolled oats have a low glycemic index, meaning blood sugar levels are stable and prevents rapid spikes or drops. Managing your blood sugar can prevent future complications such as diabetes, or heart disease.
