Matcha has been gaining popularity within recent years due to its delicious flavor and its amazing helpful attributes toward human health! There are a variety of ways to consume matcha, including: lattes, desserts, smoothies, etc. Here at moüthfuel, we value the education and understanding of this supportive superfood, and the beneficiary effects that influenced us to incorporate it in our products.

Matcha is not just a trendy drink that will come and go, instead it provides stability for bodily functions. Understanding the long history of this superfood can really help understand why and how it is regaining its popularity in the present day. Matcha has been around for centuries specifically in China during the Tang dynasty. Matcha powder is made from steaming tea leaves into tea bricks which then gets roasted and grinded into powder. Within that period, matcha powder held a specific role in society. This tea was used during rituals and ceremonies holding religious/cultural background. Japan had also adopted this cultural ritual, at the time, called it “Chado” or “Sado.” Translated, this means “The Way of Tea.” Clearly, matcha powder has made an immense impact towards history and our early societies. Beside matcha’s unique history, there are many other attributes that differentiates it from other teas. For one, matcha is the only tea that is consumed in its powdered form, meaning you ingest the entire leaf and its nutrients. Matcha has forever been insanely beneficial and will continue to improve one’s health in the future!

Nutritional Benefits of Matcha powder

1. Improves brain function

Matcha has a particular combination of L-theanine and caffeine that provide an extremely helpful outcome toward the brain. L-theanine is an amino acid that is not produced by the body which is why it's important to include foods that contain this nutrient in one’s diet. While L-theanine promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety, caffeine provides a sustained energy boost. The consumption of these two compounds may lead to calm alertness. Various studies support the connection to the consumption of matcha towards improved attention span, memory, and reaction time.

2. Supports liver health

Due to matcha's high antioxidant levels, matcha contains the properties of reducing inflammation, improving lipid metabolism, and potentially preventing liver damage. The antioxidants in matcha, specifically EGCG, have the ability to neutralize any harmful radicals and protect liver cells. Studies show matcha can prevent liver damage or disease by reducing liver enzymes and improving fat and enzyme levels in the liver.

3. Lower blood pressure (lower cholesterol)

Because of Matcha’s variety of antioxidants and its amazing abilities, matcha promotes blood vessel relaxation and improves blood flow. Catechins, a specific antioxidant in matcha, are known to improve endothelial function (the function of the lining of blood vessels). Catechins may also help relax blood vessels, which can reduce the pressure on artery walls.

4. Rich in antioxidants

Matcha’s high antioxidant content is to be responsible for the majority of the beneficial aspects matcha provides. The most prominent antioxidants pertain to: Catechins, Flavonoids, Vitamin C, and Polyphenols. Each one has their own unique abilities in assisting the body!

5. Boosts heart health

Matcha's antioxidants, particularly catechins, have anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for heart disease, so reducing it may be beneficial for heart health. Not only this but matcha may enhance the function of blood vessels, making them more flexible and able to relax and contract properly. This allows for proper blood flow overall aiding one’s heart health. Understanding the possible risks to heart disease such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and inflammation, matcha may contribute to a reduced risk of developing heart disease!
